"As in water face reflects face, so a man’s heart reveals the man." – Proverbs 27:19

What do you see when you look into a clear, still body of water? Your reflection stares back at you, showing an image of who you are. Proverbs 27:19 tells us that just as water reflects our face, our hearts reflect who we truly are. While we can mask our thoughts and emotions temporarily, what’s in our hearts will eventually be revealed through our words, actions, and character.

The Heart as a Reflection of Who We Are

Water provides an unfiltered reflection—what you see is what you get. The same is true of our hearts. What we dwell on internally will inevitably shape the way we live externally.

Jesus reinforces this truth in Luke 6:45:"A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks."

This means that if our hearts are filled with love, kindness, and faith, those qualities will be reflected in our actions. If our hearts are full of bitterness, anger, or pride, that too will be evident. The heart cannot hide its true nature forever.

Applying This to Everyday Life

1. Self-Reflection: Examining Your Own Heart

Just as we look into a mirror to check our physical appearance, we must examine our hearts to assess our spiritual and emotional health. Ask yourself:

  • What do my thoughts dwell on most?

  • How do I react when things don’t go my way?

  • What do my words and actions say about the state of my heart?

Example: Imagine you get frustrated at work because a coworker takes credit for something you did. If your heart is full of pride, you might react in anger or try to get even. But if your heart is humble and rooted in Christ, you might choose to address the situation with wisdom or let it go, trusting that your work speaks for itself.

2. Guarding Your Heart: Protecting What Shapes You

What we feed our hearts affects what is reflected in our lives. That’s why Proverbs 4:23 warns: "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life."

This means being mindful of what we allow into our minds and souls, such as:

  • The music, movies, and media we consume

  • The conversations we engage in

  • The company we keep

  • The thoughts we entertain

Example: If you constantly surround yourself with negativity—gossip, complaining, or cynical thinking—your heart will absorb it, and you’ll start reflecting those same attitudes. On the other hand, if you surround yourself with uplifting, faith-filled people, their encouragement will shape your heart for the better.

3. Living Authentically: Letting Your Heart Reflect Christ

Since our hearts ultimately reveal who we are, we should strive to reflect Christ’s character. This means cultivating a heart of:

  • Love: Choosing kindness even when it’s not deserved.

  • Forgiveness: Letting go of grudges and extending grace.

  • Humility: Recognizing our need for God’s guidance.

  • Faithfulness: Staying committed to our values even when it’s difficult.

Example: Say you have a friend who wronged you. Your immediate reaction might be to cut them off or hold resentment. But if your heart is filled with God’s love, you might instead have an open conversation and choose to forgive, reflecting Christ’s mercy.

Conclusion: What Is Your Heart Reflecting?

Proverbs 27:19 reminds us that we cannot separate our actions from the condition of our hearts. If we want to reflect goodness, truth, and love, we must fill our hearts with those things.

Take time today to examine your heart. What does it reveal about you? What needs to change? The good news is that God specializes in transforming hearts. If we surrender our hearts to Him, He will shape them to reflect His goodness.

Reflection Question: What do you want your heart to reflect, and what steps can you take today to ensure that reflection is pleasing to God?
